It’s true in your home country, and it’s true here in the Philippines. Fortunately, great salaries here are typically 20% to 30% of back home.

 

If you share with us your budget we will tell you how to get the best bang for buck.  But if you’re trying to pay very low salaries by Philippines standards, we will help you change your strategy or else find you a different facility.  We are not a bottom price facility trying to recruit the cheapest offshore staff. Server, Network and Support Specialists

Network Administrator

This is a specialist that designs, supports and maintains network infrastructure such as switches, routers and firewalls.

 

Salary Range: AU $16,000 – AU $24,000 per year

Server Administrator

A specialist with the skills to install, configure, support and maintain server infrastructure and server operating systems. This person does not have significant desktop or networking skills, so for MSPs, the L2 or L3 Engineers are better suited.

Database Administrator (DBA)

Ensures the proper operation of business systems software concerned with the storage and processing of large quantities of data. Some widely used database software platforms include Oracle, Microsoft SQLServer and MySQL.

Level 2 Server & Network Engineer (MSP Quality)

A Level 2 Engineer (by the definition of an MSP ) has built a career over many years, by learning simpler technologies and then progressing onto more complicated ones.

They know PC-based technologies, have solid networking skills, and know a moderate amount about setup and support of Microsoft Server.

Only 4%-5% of applicants whose resumes suggest they are skilled enough for this role, actually do have Australian level 2 MSP skills.  We can also recruit Level 3 Engineers, but these are about a quarter of 1% of applicants (0.0025), so we do not recommend that hiring Level 3 engineers be a core part of your initial strategy. They can be a bonus win.

Level 1 Support Technicians

This role is typically the first line of assistance for all IT related queries from business users.

 

Level 1 have skills to resolve simple or repetitive technical issues and are familiar with escalation processes if they cannot resolve the issue.

 

We classify them as either a Low Level 1 (competent with only a small range of issues), or High Level 1 (a wider spectrum of desktop support and minor LAN & WAN issues).

 

They will gradually improve breadth of skills if teamed with Level 2 Engineers.

Level 0 Support Technicians

This role can be the first line of assistance for all IT related queries within a larger organisation’s internal IT department. Level 0 technicians just receive the call or message, clarifying the issue and priority and log a ticket. Like a Customer Service representative.

 

Managed Service Providers are better to use Level 1 or Level 2 technicians as their clients will expect more technical capability from front line staff.

Technical Team Leader / Coordinator

Help Desk Team Leader

Monitors, motivates and manages the service desk team members in this office.

Reports on KPIs and metrics.  Does not have a high level of technical ability, so is not going to understand the details of each job or the technical capabilities of your onshore staff.

Service Coordinator / Despatch

This is how we recommend that MSPs design this role. This person can be expected to take calls from clients, direct those calls, log tickets, assign tickets to the correct staff, and help staff balance their workload. To achieve that, the person must have significant technical ability or else they will not be able to assign tickets to the right person or rebalance workloads.  A low-mid Level 2 skillset, and someone who is a bit older and interested in Management is a good choice. 

 

It is also strongly recommended that a suitable manager from your home office attends in person to conduct the training for this role for 3-10 days. The new employee needs to learn all of your processes, and all of your staff and their skills, and all of your clients and their VIPs. that is a lot to absorb before they will be highly effective. Someone with significant team leadership experience, with SLA and KPI management experience is worth a higher salary but are harder to find.

Software Development and Digital Specialists

Senior Software Developer

A wide range of software development skills on different platforms are available. Seniors are in high demand in the Philippines like anywhere in the world.  A rule of thumb for Filipino Developers is that they will cost you around one-third the price of back home.

 

Software architecture and overall strategy should usually be done onshore, while building a strong software dev team from one or more seniors and some juniors for execution of the strategy.

Mid Software Developer

5+ years of software development experience, with exam testing to prove skills. We have a range on in-house developed software exams, but we prefer to add to those with some specific client-generated exam questions. You know what makes a good developer in your eyes.

UI/UX Developer

3+ years of experience with developing user interfaces and/or user experience functionality.  Mostly “front end” skills with some back end interface knowledge.

Android / iOS Developer

High-end app devs are in high demand.

Graphic Artist / Designer (Print versus Digital)

When recruiting this role we first need to understand whether it will be for print or web.  The software packages will differ somewhat, as with the depth of skills with some packages.  There is plenty of talent in the Philippines for these kinds of roles.  Creative graphic art is a bit different again.  We don’t recommend trying to get your offshore team to deliver marketing STRATEGY – that should be done locally.

Web Developer

We have developed a unique set of exams for testing the skills of web developers. We test and measure across more than 10 different categories of skills. Through these exams we can reliably recruit specific skills – for example we can recruit great WordPress developers if that is mostly what you need, with proven skills in WP, HTML5, CSS and whatever other scores are relevant to your role.  The salary range is wide for this reason – a “web developer” can mean a lot of skills or a few skills.

Construction Industry Specialists

Estimator or Quantity Surveyor

There is plenty of talent in the Philippines for technical construction roles. Many people have worked in Dubai during it’s boom and are now back in Philippines working on the boom happening here.  Your needs could be anywhere from basic BOM compilation through to more advanced QS work.  Its also very possible to get industry specialists, for example those with an Electrical Engineering degree with 3+ years of experience with estimating Electrical jobs.

Draftsman

Graduates from as little as $6,000 per year, through to highly experience staff with AU or US experience. There are a number of large outsourcing businesses in the Philippines that are entirely dedicated to drafting work, so headhunting is a viable option.

Engineer

Yes there’s lots of talented engineers in the Philippines too, many of whom have international experience.

 

Price vary a lot obviously, but they are typically one third of Australian salaries.

Sales & Marketing Specialists

Sales Support

This person is responsible for configuring IT hardware and software quotes, managed services quotes, or non-technical quotes.  This will need a significant amount of training by your team for the person to learn how you like quotes done, how your CRM systems work, and how they gather information from engineers etc to compile the quotes.

Note this is a sales SUPPORT role, so you should not expect this role to push and close complex sales remotely, nor conduct cold calls to generate sales.  But following up existing leads and clients, and repeat orders, they can learn to quote your common products, submit the quote to the client, and follow up to request a meeting for your sales team or to confirm or modify the order. This frees up your sales team for more complex work.

Procurement Administrator

Commonly used by MSPs or any business which has constant product orders, this is largely an administrative role. The person will produce quotes using simple standardised processes, get them approved by your team, email the quotes to clients, receive orders from clients, order goods from suppliers, organise freight for goods, and close items in your CRM for billing.

This is more an admin than a sale role, so this does not replace the need for local sales people, but they can be immensely valuable by doing the common legwork required for producing quotes and taking orders, so that your local team can be more efficient and spend more time closing complex sales.

Lead Generation Agent

List building for possible future clients.  Initial calls and email is sent to potential clients to offer to send them information or book a meeting.  May also involve Linked In lead gen campaigns or minor social media tasks.

Social Media Officer

This role will follow your instructions to post content to social media sites, improve the look of the content you produce, and coordinate all content posted to Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, and your websites.

 

The written content is best produced in your local country – Filipino English is a derivative of US English and is unlikely to be the quality you require.

Digital Advertising Specialist (Adwords, Youtube, Facebook, Linked In)

This person has experience with running online advertising campaigns.  At the lower end of the salary range they can just execute campaigns according to detailed instructions, and may not have advertised on every platform previously.  At the higher end of the salary range they have run enough advertising campaigns to produce some analysis and recommendations back to you, to fine tune digital marketing over the long term.

 

A complete digital marketing strategy is best done onshore before hiring this person. This is not the kind of person who can build a complete marketing strategy.

Search Engine Optimisation Officer

This employee will help to produce,  publish and track website content for the purpose of improving search engine ranking.

 

The content will generally need to be written by or quality checked by someone on your local team, as Filipino English is different to your English. For example, a manager on your team may write an article. The SEO person will then add and optimise key words, break it into multiple articles if possible, publish to web and social media, and develop some links to the content.

 

Note that SEO is a rapidly changing field and tactics from even a few years ago can become outdated and useless. If your onshore team does not have in-house skills with SEO, then you are really better off to outsource SEO to a local company like www.ionline.com.au rather than hire someone who will be poorly managed and directed.

Administration Officer

One of the challenges with this role is to define it clearly, and set expectations correctly.  Experience admin staff in Australia and other countries have typically done a broad scope of duties, making them quite flexible. In the Philippines role tend to be a lot narrower. Sometimes it makes sense to build it as two separate roles with some cross training. This gives you more capacity and greater day-to-day reliability against sick leave etc.
